Babies as young as 6 months can begin meaningful musical play with the right instruments. The brain regions responsible for rhythm, pitch perception, and language develop in a synchronized window during the first two years, and giving infants safe, well-designed instruments during this window produces measurable gains in later language and motor outcomes.

Baby instruments need to clear a higher bar than older-child versions. No small parts (under 30mm in any direction is the standard safe threshold), no cords or strings, non-toxic finishes that survive being mouthed, and sounds soft enough not to startle.
