Pretend Play

Pretend play is one of the highest-value activities in early childhood — and one of the most under-supplied in modern homes. Decades of research show that children who engage in extended pretend play develop stronger executive function, language, theory of mind, and emotional regulation than peers who spend equivalent time on structured or screen-based activities. The act of pretending requires holding multiple frames in mind (this is a stick, but it's also a sword), which is exactly the mental flexibility that supports later academic and social success.

The pretend-play sets we recommend are chosen for open-endedness over scripted scenarios. A wooden kitchen set children will return to for years; a generic doll children will name and rename across hundreds of stories; a doctor's kit that supports both medical scenarios and the inevitable "taking care of teddy" play. We avoid pretend toys with embedded screens, scripted dialogue, or single-use scenarios.
