Sensory Play
Tactile, visual, and auditory sensory toys for toddlers
Sensory play — engaging touch, sight, sound, smell, and the often-overlooked proprioceptive (body-position) and vestibular (balance) senses — is one of the most-studied and most-recommended early-childhood activities. Occupational therapists use sensory play both diagnostically and therapeutically, and well-designed sensory bins, light tables, and kinetic-sand kits produce measurable improvements in fine motor, attention, and language outcomes.
The sensory toys we recommend are chosen for safety (especially around small parts and choking hazards for under-3s), durability, and the breadth of the sensory experience they offer. A good sensory bin works across years; a cheap one produces 20 minutes of play and then breaks. We favor open-ended, refillable systems over single-use kits.
Sensory play is also a remarkably effective way to support children who feel over- or under-stimulated. A weighted lap pad during quiet time, a kinetic-sand session before transitions, or 10 minutes at the light table can reset a dysregulated child in ways that talking through it cannot.
What to Look For
- ✓Large parts (no small beads or pieces) for under-3 sensory bins.
- ✓Non-toxic, food-safe fill materials (rice, beans, water beads sized for older kids).
- ✓Light tables with diffused LED, not bare bulb (eye safety).
- ✓Weighted items at no more than 10% of the child's body weight.
- ✓Easy-clean surfaces and washable containers — sensory play is messy by design.

Common Questions
At what age can sensory play start?
From birth in simple forms (different fabric textures, skin-to-skin contact, sound exposure). Structured bins with loose materials are best from age 3, once mouthing has decreased.
Are water beads safe?
For age 3+ with supervision, yes. For under-3, no — they're a serious choking and ingestion hazard.
How long should a sensory session last?
Follow the child's lead. Many toddlers will engage for 20–40 minutes — far longer than most structured activities. That deep, self-directed focus is developmentally valuable.
