Moral of the Story

Hard work and preparation keep you safe.

Rooted in English oral tradition and first appearing in print around 1840, The Three Little Pigs tells of three siblings who each build a house, straw, sticks, and brick, before a hungry wolf comes calling. Aimed at children ages 3-7, the story rewards the pig who works hardest and plans ahead, giving young listeners a clear, concrete lesson about the payoff of effort and preparation over shortcuts. The repeated wolf's chant and the escalating structure of each house being tested make the tale easy to predict and join in on, which supports early memory and language skills as kids anticipate what happens next. Because the pigs also help one another once danger arrives, the story quietly reinforces teamwork alongside its message about diligence. Many child-development experts note that tales with this kind of clear cause-and-effect structure help children practice sequencing events and understanding consequences, skills that carry over into everyday problem-solving. It's a natural pick for bedtime or story circle, especially alongside other traditional English tales. The Story

Once upon a time, three little pigs grew up and went out into the world to build their own homes.

The first little pig was lazy. He built his house quickly out of straw. "This is good enough!" he said, and went off to play.

The second little pig worked a little harder. He built his house out of sticks. "This will do!" he said, and went off to enjoy the sunshine.

But the third little pig was thoughtful and hardworking. He spent many days building a sturdy house of bricks, making sure every wall was strong and every corner was solid.

One day, a Big Bad Wolf came to the first pig's straw house. "Little pig, little pig, let me come in!" "Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin!" "Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll BLOW your house down!" And with one great breath, the straw house was gone. The first pig ran to his brother's stick house.

The wolf followed. "Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in!" Again they refused. The wolf huffed and puffed and blew the stick house down. Both pigs ran to their brother's brick house.

The wolf arrived and huffed and puffed with all his might — but the brick house stood firm. He tried again and again, but could not blow it down. Finally, the wolf tried to climb down the chimney, but the third pig had a pot of boiling water waiting, and the wolf fled the forest and never came back.

The three little pigs lived safely in the brick house, and the first two pigs learned that hard work is always worth the effort.
